The Plains Town Center

The Town of The Plains is located in Fauquier County. The population was 217 at the 2010 census. It is centered on the intersection of Virginia Route 55 (John Marshall Highway) and Virginia Route 245 (Old Tavern Road). Additionally, the Town of The Plains is situated off Interstate 66.

The Plains is home to Great Meadow, a large open-air and open-field facility that hosts several large events throughout the year, such as the Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase horse race, which attracts over 50,000 guests on the first Saturday of each May, as well as being the home of the Team America Rocketry Challenge held in the same month.

The Mayor and Town Council members are elected by the citizens of the town for four-year terms.  A part-time Clerk/Treasurer assist the Council with maintaining the daily affairs of governing the town.  The Clerk/Treasurer and Town Attorney are appinted by the Mayor and Council for two year terms.  The Town Zoning Administrator and Subdivision Administrator is appointed by the Mayor and Council to assist the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals.
